History & About

“Why are there two dates on the cornerstone?”

It’s a question we asked, and heard, many times when the idea of turning the old JC Penney building into a hotel first started making the rounds. As it turns out, the building that now houses The Hotel Sturgis has a story worth telling.

The original structure, known as Benevolent Hall, was built in 1892. The main floor served as a retail store and storeroom, while the upper floor was a gathering place for lodges and secret orders. In March 1906, the building was destroyed by fire. Later that year, a new cornerstone was laid as the hall was rebuilt.

Since then, the space has housed a variety of businesses—from a hardware store to JC Penney, A&J II, and C&D Sales. Today, it’s home to The Hotel Sturgis.

With its rich history, staying at The Hotel Sturgis means more than just a place to rest—it’s a way to support the future of an independent, family-owned, local business committed to giving back to the Sturgis community.
